Nowadays dentists at Fountain Square Cosmetic Dental Group count on a new tool called ViziLite Plus to help them detect oral cancer at a much earlier stage. This is a tool with a special rinse that dehydrates cells, and a light source that illuminates them so dentists are able to identify and evaluate abnormalities they might have missed during a regular exam.
The American Cancer Society reports than more than 30,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year, 7,000 of which will die. ViziLite Plus may be able to save additional lives.
The ViziLite Plus exam takes only minutes, is totally painless and non-invasive, and is a particularly important exam if you are at increased risk for developing oral cancer… remember it could also save your life.
In order for the dentist to carry out the exam:
You shall rinse with a cleansing solution
The overhead lighting will be dimmed.
A specially designed light technology will pass over the oral tissue that has been treated with the rinse solution
As ViziLite Plus passes over the normal healthy tissue absorbs the light and appears dark whereas abnormal tissue will appear white. Once abnormal tissue has been identified it is up to your dentist to determine what the appropriate next steps will be.
A ViziLite Plus exam is recommended for patients 18 and older, and a visual exam for younger patients.
